| SPECIAL EVENTS IN APPLEBY-IN-WESTMORLAND | |
![]() |
Whatever time of year you choose to visit Appleby-in-Westmorland you won't be disappointed, as there is a wealth of activities, attractions and events. Appleby's many recreational facilities include squash courts, a swimming pool, cricket pitch, bowling green and playgrounds, all in the centre of town. Furthermore, set against the backdrop of the northern Pennines, is one of the most impressive golf courses in the North. For the outdoor enthusiast, there are opportunities for walking, climbing, riding, fishing, bird watching and clay shooting. For the historian, Appleby boasts a Norman Castle which was restored in the seventeenth century. St. Anne's Hospital is now a peaceful courtyard of almshouses originally built for thirteen poor widows of the castle estate. St. Lawrence's Church is set between the cloisters and the cricket field. It houses one of the oldest surviving church organs in the country, and it is still in regular use. For more relaxed evenings, plays and concerts, including the Appleby Jazz Festival, are regularly featured.

In June 2006 we will celebrate the annual Appleby Horse Fair for the three hundred and fifty fifth time. It is a colourful attraction and travelling folk from all over the country converge on the town for a week-long holiday to buy and sell horses and to compete in trotting races. |
